Celebrate Law Day with the Virginia Beach Bar Foundation at its Law Day Gala Event on May 7, 2009. President Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day as a "day of national dedication to the principle of government under law." In celebration of Law Day, on May 7, 2009, we will celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, regarded by many as our nation's greatest and most elegant president and his "Legacy of Liberty" at the beautiful new Sandler Center for the Performing Arts. The speaker will be Michael Beschloss. Mr. Beschloss is an award winning historian and author of eight books on the Presidency, including his most recent work, the acclaimed New York Times bestseller "The Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler's Germany, 1941-1945," which was the top selling history book in America the year it was published. Newsweek has called Beschloss, "the nation's leading presidential historian" and recently, he was appointed as the NBC News Presidential Historian, the first person with that title in the history of NBC. Mr.Beschloss also makes regular appearances on Meet the Press, The Today Show, PBS' The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and other network programs. The Conquerors was an immediate national bestseller. In a front page review, Thomas Powers wrote in the New York Times Book Review that the "vigorously-written" book was "history as it was spoken at the time, and there is not a dull page."Mr. Bescholoss' other books have been described as "shear marvelous history," "an incomparable portrait of a president at work," "a grand narrative...crowded with well-drawn portraits," as well as having received many other accolades from such sources as the Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker, the New York Times, and Newsweek. He is now working on a history of Abraham Lincoln's last days and his assassination to be published by Simon & Schuster. His presentation on "Lincoln’s Bicentennial – Legacy of Liberty"is sure to be thought provoking, entertaining and educational.
