On May 1st, the 50th Anniversary of Law Day, The Virginia Beach Bar Foundation held an inaugural Law Day Gala fundraiser at the Sandler Center for Performing Arts located in the Central Business District. Legal professionals, students, and history enthusiasts filled nearly 1000 seats to hear the well known scholar Clay Jenkinson discuss the Rule of Law in the persona of Thomas Jefferson.

This celebration of Law Day brought together the local legal community to benefit the Foundation, and raised close to $30,000, thanks to the generosity of event sponsors, and support from local business leaders.

Law Day is celebrated on May 1st each year to praise this country's constitutional system of government and great heritage of Rule of Law. The Foundation's mission is to champion access for the disadvantaged and underserved in our system of justice, and to promote education for the public about the importance of the Rule of Law in protecting their freedoms.

PRESS RELEASE

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Law Day with the Virginia Beach Bar Foundation at its Inaugural Law Day Gala Event. President Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day as a "day of national dedication to the principle of government under law." Law Day, May 1, 2008, will explore the meaning of the rule of law and the fostering of public understanding of the rule of law through discussion of its role in a free society.

The 2008 Law Day Gala Event will take place at the beautiful new Sandler Center for the Performing Arts and will include a performance by the highly sought-after humanities scholar, Clay Jenkinson. Appearing in the persona of Thomas Jefferson, Mr. Jenkinson will explore the third president's views about the rule of law and its importance in protecting our freedom and individual liberties. After his presentation, Mr. Jenkinson will answer questions from the audience both in and out of character.

Mr. Jenkinson is one of the nation’s leading interpreters of Thomas Jefferson and has lectured about and portrayed Jefferson in forty-nine states over the past nineteen years. He has performed before presidents, Supreme Court justices, state legislatures, countless corporate, public and student audiences and has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including as host of NPR's "The Thomas Jefferson Hour." His performances are always humorous, educational and thought provoking, and his appearance at the 2008 Law Day Gala Event will be no exception.
